Meet the Media: Bobby Mace, Publisher and Author at Transmission Digest

Can you tell us what types of stories, trends or issues are on your radar now?

In addition to our technical education mission, we are working on a number of feature articles and videos discussing industry trends and products with retail shops, volume builders and their suppliers.

What elements or characteristics do you look for in a story, and why?

Every story should include one or more of three basic objectives: to educate; to inform and/or to entertain the audience.

Describe the craziest or most fun story you’ve written.

Away from Transmission Digest, I spent several years writing a satirical column for a local, every-other-week newspaper.

How long have you been in journalism and how did you get started?

It’s been more than 50 years. I started with high school and college newspapers. In college I began working in a radio news department and eventually made the change to the automotive trade media.

What advice do you have for PR people that want to pitch you or your publication?

We love input from many sources. The concept of a “digest” is to gather and combine the thoughts and contributions from multiple sources.

Any pet peeves with PR people?

As a publisher, of course, I always prefer paid advertising. That said, the PR folks provide insights and content that leads to better and more engaging publications.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, interests, favorites, background, etc.)

I have a grown daughter who is a certified social worker/counselor. She lives a few hours away so spending time with her is always a priority. Beyond that I like to take advantage of golf courses that have a set fee to play. I take more strokes than most and assume that means maximum value.

Finish this sentence: If I am not reporting, I am …

Keeping current with the larger aftermarket. Transmissions may seem a fairly narrow focus but there are significant segments of related components/sub-assemblies including valve body, transfer case and torque converter. And, there are specialized applications that are sub-markets to themselves as with drag racing, street rods and towing.
